How Does an Aimbot Work? The Signs That Give It Away
What is an aimbot? It is a cheat feature that automatically moves your crosshair onto an enemy. You press the button and the program picks the aim point. Below we explain how an aimbot works, which settings it has and the signs other players and anti-cheat systems use to spot it.

What is an aimbot?
An aimbot reads enemy coordinates from the game and turns the camera so the crosshair lands on the target. Unlike ESP, which only shows information, an aimbot directly takes part in your shooting.
It usually does not run all the time. It works on a key: while the key is held, the crosshair pulls toward the nearest valid target.
How an aimbot works: the main settings
- FOV. The circle around the crosshair where the aimbot looks for targets. The smaller it is, the fewer sharp camera turns.
- Smoothing. How fast the crosshair moves onto the target. Without it aiming is instant; with it, the motion looks closer to a human hand.
- Aim point. Head, neck, chest or the bone closest to the crosshair.
- Prediction. In games with ballistics, such as Escape from Tarkov, Rust and DayZ, bullets are not instant, so the aimbot accounts for bullet drop and target movement.
- Silent aim. A mode where shots hit the target without any visible camera turn on the player's screen.
Rage vs legit: two aimbot styles
A rage aimbot uses a large FOV, up to the whole screen, no smoothing and almost always aims at the head. To other players it looks like instant flicks and hits.
A legit aimbot only locks on to targets close to the crosshair, moves smoothly and picks different bones, often the body. From the outside it looks like a strong player at work.
Available modes depend on the specific product and are listed on its page.
How aimbots are spotted from player behavior
What gives an aimbot away is not the hits themselves but how the player gets them. Anti-cheat systems and real players watch for several signs:
- sharp snaps: the crosshair jumps onto a target in a split second and freezes there;
- an unnaturally high and stable headshot rate at every distance;
- the same reaction time from an enemy appearing to the first shot;
- tracking a target the player should not be able to see;
- precise hits on moving targets at long range with no adjustment shots.
Large developers have used behavior analysis for years. In 2018 Valve described VACnet for CS:GO: a neural network that looks at how a player's view angles changed in roughly the half second before a shot and the quarter second after, together with the weapon, distance and shot result. The system needs a sequence of about 140 shots to reach a verdict, and disputed cases are also reviewed by people.
FAQ
What is the difference between an aimbot and a triggerbot?
An aimbot moves the crosshair onto the target. A triggerbot does not move the crosshair; it fires automatically when the crosshair is already on an enemy.
Does an aimbot work in games with bullet drop?
Yes, if the cheat has prediction. Without it, long-range shots in Escape from Tarkov or Rust will drop low or miss a moving target.
Can you use an aimbot without ESP?
Yes, they are separate features. But an aimbot only works on targets inside its FOV, so the two are often used together.
Does every cheat include an aimbot?
No. Some products only have visual features. The feature list is shown on each product page.
Bottom line
So how does an aimbot work? It aims for you using data from the game. FOV and smoothing settings change how it looks to others, and aimbots are spotted mostly by behavior: snaps, reaction times and hit statistics. Check the product page in the EliteHacks catalog to see which aimbot modes a specific cheat offers.
